Holiday Traffic: Avoid These Roads
Posted Dec, 23 2010
Nothing dampens holiday spirit than backed up traffic on congested interstates. Many AAA clubs around the nation are reporting an expected increase in the numbers of travelers driving over the holidays this year, as opposed to flying. That’s going to make travel even more difficult than it usually is. But even if you get stuck in some holiday congestion, at least you can take solace in the fact that you are not standing in a security line at the airport.
We’ve compiled a list of the most congested interstates in the country, using data from Inrix’s 2009 National Travel Scorecard. Inrix is a real-time traffic data provider, and every year it compiles this ranking of the worst traffic bottlenecks in America. Unsurprisingly, New York, Chicago and Los Angeles take all but a few of the top 100 places in Inrix’s rankings, but we’ve picked locations across the country for our list.

No surprise here, the city that never sleeps also has traffic that never ends. Do your best to avoid the Cross Bronx Express Way.
Inrix ranking: 2The windy city doesn't get a pass for traffic congestion, especially during the holiday season. Just hope there isn't snow or this route could take a turn for the worse.
Inrix ranking: 6I-91 traffic is no picnic in general, but this area should be avoided.
Inrix ranking: 7Los Angeles freeways are notoriously congested, and holiday traffic just compounds the issue. If you must jump into the US 101 traffic, we suggests getting an early start.

Traffic on the Penn Lincoln Parkway can be messy over the holidays. You might want to map an alternate route, or set your GPS to avoid it if you can.
Inrix ranking: 57If you live in the Bay Area, you have most likely been caught in CA-185 traffic at one time or another. Over the holidays, find another traffic route if you can.
Inrix ranking: 69NY-17 Traffic around the holidays may wish you were driving a sleigh instead of your car. Major congestion starts at Exit 120.
Inrix ranking: 70The 520 traffic over the lake can get messy during the holidays, and there is no real way to avoid this. A little patience and some music to get you in the holiday mood will help you pass the time.
Inrix ranking: 76I-35 traffic during rush hour can be a pain, but add all of Texas flowing through the corridor during the holidays and you have some real time on your hands. Avoid the temptation to follow the rogue driver that decides the shoulder IS part of the highway also.
