Crossovers, also known as light-duty SUVs, are selling quite well in the early Autumn.
Why? Gas prices have been falling over the last three months, putting more car buyers into the market with extra cash.
Also, recent spikes in gas prices over the past three years have been driving down demand in gas thirsty full-size SUVs like Chevy Suburbans and Ford Expeditions, and driving up demand for lighter-weight, thriftier vehicles that also have a large degree of utility for families.
Several automakers have replaced some of their SUV models with lighter weight crossovers. The old truck-based Ford Explorer, for example, has been replaced with a car-based crossover Explorer that is selling much better than the old one. GM's Equinox has replaced the old discontinued Chevy TrailBlazer in the driveways of a lot of former SUV buyers.
Some crossovers are being replaced soon, so companies are selling down the old models with discounts and aggressive dealing in the showrooms. The Ford Escape, for example, will be replaced in a few months with an all new design. And the all-new Honda CR-V will be in showrooms within a few months as well.
