Car thefts are way down, to their lowest levels since the 1960s, thanks to a proliferation of auto security devices. But, according to anti-theft system maker LoJack, there is still a desire for heisting some of the most commonly owned cars in the U.S.
Some 740,000 vehicles were stolen last year out of about 60 million on the road. According to LoJack, a vehicle gets stolen every 43 seconds. The national recovery rate for stolen vehicles in 2010 was less than 56.1 percent - a 25+ year low.
LoJack says that there is a 90% chance of recovering a stolen vehicle equipped with the system--usually within 24 hours and often within just a few hours.
Last year, the most stolen vehicles without regard to vehicle age equipped with LoJack was the Honda Civic, followed by the Toyota Camry, Honda Civic, The Acura Integra and Toyota Corolla. Why so many Honda's? Two reasons: Hondas have strong resale value and the company also uses the greatest number of common parts among its vehicles, including Acura brand vehicles, making the parts easy to peddle.
