1999 Volkswagen GTI Overview

Introduction

The 2-door Volkswagen GTI hatchback has been redesigned this year to be sportier, and to complete Volkswagen's plans to modernize the look of their entire lineup.

The GTI comes in two trims, available as either the GLS or the sportier GLX. The GLS comes with a 2.0L engine which produces 115 hp @ 5,200 rpm, and is available in either standard or automatic transmissions. The GLX is available only with a 5-speed manual transmission, and houses a 2.8L engine that is capable of 174 hp @ 5,800 rpm.

This year's redesign not only saw a huge increase in power, but also brought many upgraded features, including an available CD player.
