The Mercedes-Benz SL-Class models have always been stately, well-constructed two-seat roadsters, created in small volumes for customers with discriminating taste. For 2009, an ultra-exclusive SL65 AMG Black Series coupe joins the family, adding track-ready performance to impressive on-road credentials.
The SL-Class roadster is offered in four models: SL550, SL600, an all-new SL63 AMG and the SL65 AMG. The SL550 is powered by a 382-hp 5.5-liter V8 engine, mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission. The SL600 is outfitted with a 510-hp 5.5-liter bi-turbo V12, while the SL65's larger 6.0-liter bi-turbo V12 generates 604 horsepower and a formidable 738 pound-feet of torque; both engines are paired with a five-speed automatic transmission with shift paddles. The SL63 AMG boasts a hand-built 518-hp 6.3-liter V8, as well as a new seven-speed MCT (multi-clutch technology) transmission not found in any other Mercedes model. The SL65 AMG Black Series coupe employs the same hand-built 6.0-liter bi-turbo V12 engine found in the roadster, modified to generate 661 horsepower. It is matched to a revised five-speed automatic transmission, boasting AMG SpeedShift Plus with four driver-selectable modes; an AMG performance steering wheel is outfitted with aluminum paddles for manual shifting. All SL-Class roadster models are equipped with a power retractable hardtop, adaptive suspension with Active Body Control (ABC), heated leather seats, automatic climate control, satellite radio and a voice-activated navigation system. Elements exclusive to the SL65 AMG Black Series include a uniquely calibrated driver-adjustable sport suspension, a rear spoiler with automatic speed-dependent deployment, and staggered forged alloy wheels: 19 x 9.5-inch up front and 20 x 11.5-inch at the rear. A three-stage electronic stability program (ESP) with sport mode, along with ultra high-performance tires and massive composite brakes, enhances both handling and safety aspects. Other standard safety features include four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, stability and traction control, front, side and driver knee airbags, and an automatically deployable rollover bar (roadster only).
For 2009, the Mercedes-Benz SL-Class receives a facelift, with all models now sporting more aggressive AMG body styling, redesigned Bi-Xenon headlamps with Active Curve Illumination, and a new multimedia interface with DVD, iPod and Bluetooth capabilities. Additionally, an all-new SL63 AMG model, with unique styling and technologies, replaces the previous year's SL55 AMG, and the limited-edition SL65 AMG Black Series coupe makes its debut. Based on a modified and lightened version of the SL65 AMG roadster, it replaces the power hardtop with a fixed carbon fiber roof; other carbon fiber elements, such as the hood, trunk lid, front and rear aprons and wider front fenders, lend a dramatic appearance, as well as additional weight savings.

Reviews
The Mercedes SL debuted in 1957 and has been an object of lust ever since. A two-seat, rear-wheel-drive roadster, the SL is the classic sporting Mercedes. Like the original, today's SL boasts outstanding performance. The Mercedes-Benz SL-Class has matured in every way over its six generations, quicker and faster on the one hand, more beautiful and more luxurious on the other, to the point where it lacks absolutely nothing, from its array of powerful V8 and V12 engines to its powerful stereo to i...
