2005 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Overview

Introduction

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class is a more than capable rugged off-road vehicle, which was first designed for military use in the 1970's.

There are two models available, the G500 and the G55 AMG, and both models are offered as the Base trim and the more upscale Grand Edition. Either choice packs a great deal of off-road punch, as all models obtain a highly advanced all-wheel drive system including locking front, center, and rear differentials. The G500's power comes from a 5.0L V-8 engine, with 292 hp @ 5500 rpm and 336 lb-ft of torque @ 3000 rpm. Taking it one step further, the G55 AMG consists of a 5.4L V-8 engine, with 469 hp @ 5500 rpm and 516 lb-ft of torque @ 2800 rpm. Both models consist of standard side curtain airbags, 10-way power heated front bucket seats, 18” wheels, sunroof, and a Harmon/Kardon Premium stereo. Optional on both models is Sirius satellite radio, navigation, integrated Motorola Digital V60 phone with voice control and a customized luggage set. Both models have average fuel economy for this segment, with the G500 producing 13 mpg in the city and 14 mpg on the highway, and the G55 AMG at 12 mpg in the city and 14 mpg on the highway.

For 2005 the G-Class is a carryover vehicle with a first-ever redesign coming in 2006.
