2009 RX-8 Touring: Happily in love with the car

I must caution for anyone looking into owning a rotary you must do your research and learn as much as possible about the engine before you jump into owning the car. The RX-8 is not high on fuel consumption and occasionally needs a feeding of oil but (and this is a BIG but) the reward of what the rotary brings to the driver experience is more than worth just driving, its a must own for a true car enthusiast. I have over 8k miles on the car and my first car was a RX-7 and in my honest opinion the only true way to get the most out of experiencing the car is by driving the manual. Hands down. The car itself is amazing in terms of sporty handling and turning an everyday commuter drive into spirited drive that will continue to impress yourself and even others around if they notice. For the price of the car many rivals offer flat out straight line acceleration better, although the RX-8 is no slouch in a straight line (really any car that can get to 60 under 7 seconds is not really slow). The car is an overall package deal from top notch steering that is nary out of place, brakes that are just plain awesome with amazing feel with application and the rowing of gears that can never bore. Everything from the placement of the engine to the entire layout and feel of the car is done with being precise in mind. That precise thought from Mazda allows the driver to exploit the car to its limits in fun/balanced/controlled manner that is altogether rare even in the sports car market. The rotary sounds like no other and the updates of the 2009 plus year models are well worth a look and make a great departure from a "common" 2003-2008 RX-8. I enjoy owning this car everyday and after acquainting the proper knowledge of the engine I realized it is not a hard car to maintain and it is just different and that can be a beauty depending on your outlook. For a sports car the rotary made it possible to have a true 4-door sports car that can be raced and driven home just as happily.

Love it or Hate it - will depend on what degree of lemon you get. I had a LOT of problems with mine, paint blistered (repaired) then discolored (told tough), then the "flooding" (first time covered by dealer, then told tough - your fault). They can fit an engine temp alarm but that cost $$ and not fitted as standard cause of the "market image". Final straw for me was the dropped rotor, and bill to replace entire image. Mazda excuse was "fuel sold in this country is not suited to the engine" - well duh, how can that either not be made known or dealt with. 4th mazda - but never again. RX8 sold, looks good but too many problems, and cheap points scored (start with interior and work outwards). For current owners - as soon as you notice the power drop sell the car, or start saving for a new engine.

I bought my RX-8 in may of '08....it is extremely fun to drive! I got the GT package, everything but nav. It handles well, it sounds like nothing else when revved, it looks like nothing else on the road, it gets alot of stares and some thumbs up. The mpg's are fair but this car has a very unique engine that is only 1.3 liters in size and yet it produces over 230 horsepower, there is no other production car with a greater horsepower to liter ratio and it has one of the highest redlines around, 9,000 RPM! So no it doesn't get 40mpg for the above reasons...it seats 4 with its unusual doors in the rear. It doesn't do well in the snow but so far rain has never been a problem. I have an '08 and it is the dark grey color with sand colored leather heated seats....it has the Bose sound system. Overall this car is fast, fun, original, (doesn't look like all the other toyota/honda/nissan looking oval shapes) I doubt that you will be disappointed with it. Enjoy~
