The Mazda6 is the sports sedan of front-drive midsize cars. It is designed for the driving enthusiast. While it may not match the power of sports sedans in other more lofty price brackets, the Mazda6 offers a big punch for a lower sticker price.

The Mazda6 is available in either sedan or hatchback, each offering a choice of 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine or a 3.0-liter V-6 engine. The former generates 156 horsepower while the V-6 gets 212 horsepower, each engine teams to a five-speed manual transmission; or a five-speed automatic for the four-cylinder and a six-speed automatic for the V-6. Antilock brakes, side-impact airbags and side-curtain airbags are standard.

For 2008, the Mazda6 loses both its wagon and high-performance Mazdaspeed6 version, but gains a tire pressure monitoring system.

Most impressive is the 6's steering, which feels as if it took a few lessons at the Miata finishing school. Turn-in is sharp, and the variable-assist rack-and-pinion system provides good feedback and little need for correction at higher speeds.
