When the car is in perfect condition it is a blast to drive, even the base model (better with the manual trans). I have been having more mechanical issues than a car that was predicted to have excellent reliability should have. Since I bought the car I have done a complete AZ overhaul, a motor mount, a solenoid, air bag clockspring, the seal on the gas tank, wheel bearing. Best Car for the $$
I can't say enough about the Mazda 3s; I bought mine new in May of 2004 (its initial year). It has 88,000 miles on it and not a single thing has gone wrong with it... other than a broken gas cap. I'm not kidding. Other than routine maintenance (brakes, oil changes, tires), a bad gas cap was the only malfunction this car as ever had. I've had mine since 06 and I love ******** sporty and gets great mileage. Mine has leather and 6 disc cd changer. It looks great, runs great and I think I am a Mazda buyer for life now!
