2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overview

Introduction

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is an icon among sport utility vehicles. It looks wonderful; it's powerful but quiet at the same time; it offers good space efficiency and comes loaded with standard and optional features.

The Grand Cherokee comes in four trim levels: Laredo, Limited, Overland, and SRT8. The Laredo comes with a 210-horsepower, 3.7-liter V6 and a five-speed automatic transmission. The 4.7-liter overhead-cam V8 is optional with 2WD or 4WD. The Limited comes with the 4.7-liter V8 and leather upholstery. The Hemi is optional on both 2WD and 4WD Limiteds, and when ordered on the latter comes with Jeep's latest Quadra-Drive II full-time active 4WD. The Overland comes with the 5.7-liter Hemi, and adds things like a wood-and-leather steering wheel, two-tone leather and ultra-suede seats, and a ParkSense reverse-parking sensor. The Overland 4WD adds Quadra-Drive II. The SRT8 comes with a 6.1-liter Hemi rated 420 horsepower, a lowered suspension and its own electronic all-wheel-drive system.

For 2006, the Jeep Grand Cherokee comes in a performance enhanced SRT8 edition and a new Overland model.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee retains the rugged spirit of a midsize Jeep SUV, combined with the engineering and quality control closer to the Daimler-Benz tradition.

The Grand Cherokee is available with a couple of modern engines. The 5.7-liter Hemi V8 is particularly good for towing or driving at higher elevations. The SRT8 has a 420-hp 6.1-liter Hemi and can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in less than five seconds. The smaller, 4.7-liter overhead-cam V8 works quite well, however, and the standard overhead-cam V6 is a big improvement over Jeep's old overhead-valve inline-6. New for 2007 are a 3.0-liter turbodiesel V-6 and a flex-fuel 4.7-liter V-8. It comes in four trims: Laredo, Limited, Overland, and SRT8. The four-wheel drive system has an optional fourth trim, the SRT8. The Laredo trim starts with a 210-hp 3.7-liter V6, the Limited gets a 305-hp, flex-fuel 4.7-liter V8 (optional on Laredo), and the top-of-the-line Overland has a 330-hp 5.7-liter V8 Hemi (optional on Limited). The high performance SRT8 trim is powered by a 6.1-liter 420-hp V8. Finally a 3.0-liter turbo diesel V6 is optional on all trims (except for SRT8). Power is delivered through a standard five-speed automatic transmission. Safety features that come on all Grand Cherokees include an electronic stability program, four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with brake assist, traction control, a tire-pressure monitoring system, side-curtain air bags, and front advanced multi-stage air bags.

For 2008, the Jeep Grand Cherokee receives a more powerful 4.7-liter V8 and gets subtle exterior and interior detailing changes.
