The Compass is an affordable compact SUV meant to bring the Jeep name to a broader range of drivers with car-like on-road capability and fuel economy.
Sharing the same platform as its stablemate the Patriot, the Compass offers a choice of front-wheel or full-time four-wheel drive. Two trims are available: Sport and Limited. All trims are standard with a 172-hp 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine and five-speed manual transmission; A Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) is optional. A 158-hp 2.0L engine with only the CVT can be had on the FWD Sport trim. Standard safety features include anti-lock brakes with brake assist, electronic stability control w/roll mitigation, traction control and side-curtain air bags.
The Jeep Compass was new for 2007, for 2008 air conditioning is standard on all trims, three new exterior colors were added along with some other minor interior changes.
NHTSA rates crash-tested vehicles by assigning them one to five stars, with five stars indicating the most injury protection and one star indicating the least protection.
