The Hyundai Genesis sedan is designed to offer the luxury appointments of much more expensive cars, for less.

The Genesis can be had with a 333-hp 3.8-liter V6, a 385-hp (using premium fuel) 4.6-liter V8, or a 429-hp 5.0-liter V8. All engines send power to the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission that features manual sequential shift capability. Mechanical safety features include traction control, stability control, and panic brake assist. The interior features a full compliment of airbags, electronic active front headrests that provide whiplash protection, and a tire pressure monitor. Luxurious leather seats, automatic dual-zone climate control and woodgrain trim are just some of the appointments this car offers that are typically only found in vehicles costing much more.

The Genesis receives several notable changes for 2012. The 3.8-liter gains gasoline direct injection (GDI) which ups the horsepower to 333. A new 5.0-liter engine with 429 horsepower has been added to the line-up. The 4.6 and 5.0 gain heated rear seats, puddle lamps, power folding exterior mirrors and lane departure warning for 2012.

Many Genesis buyers are new to the Hyundai brand, abandoning more established makes and spawning more than one biblically inspired aphorism of h... Read Full Review

AT A GLANCE

...the transmission is slow. Up- and downshifts drag, and we were able to count off full seconds before getting what we wanted after stomping through the kickdown switch. All cars have a gate for manual actuation, but when the transmission takes longer to respond than an estranged fourth wife, it's hard to care.
