Introduction

The Hyundai Elantra is an affordable compact car with handsome styling, clean lines, and good fuel economy.

Though the Elantra offers only one trim level after the cancellation of the GLS trim, the GL trim is available on both sedan and wagon models. The GL is equipped with a 1.4L 4-cylinder engine, which outputs 140 hp @ 6000 rpm and 133 lb-ft @ 4800 rpm, and averages 24 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway. Buyers also have a choice between 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic transmission for both models. Safety features on the Elantra GL include standard airbags.

For 1999, the Hyundai Elantra remains basically unchanged, aside from a few upgrades including a bigger engine.
