The C-Max Energi plug-in hybrid uses Ford's powersplit technology to significantly improve fuel economy over similarly sized vehicles using conventional powertrains.

The C-Max Energi uses a 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder gas engine combined with a lithium-ion battery-driven electric motor. This powersplit architecture has the flexibility to power the wheels with the electric motor and gas engine together, or separately. The C-Max Energi features an external charge port that accepts either a 120- or 240-volt charge. Exterior features include power heated mirrors, dual sliding rear doors, fog lights and 17-inch alloy wheels. Interior appointments include seating for five, power drivers seat, heated front seats, leather seating, and dual-zone automatic climate control. A hands-free power liftgate, rearview camera, active park assist, navigation system, Sony audio are available options.

The C-Max Energi is new for 2013.

AT A GLANCE

Based on the superb C-Max Hybrid, a nicer and better small wagon than the Toyota Prius v, the Energi adds capability on the electric side.
