My 2012 Fisker Karma
I got mine in early June. I have been trouble free, and literally use no gas accept for highway travel. I take an occasional 80-90 mile trip, other than *********** all electric. The car is smoother and quieter than any car I have owned, including the BMW 535i I traded in on it. I have not missed the BMW once, and frankly find myself looking for places to go so I can drive more. This car has the road feel, steering, and breaking of a supercar. I occasionally switch to sport mode for faster acceleration, but even with that, I average over 150MPG driving 1000 miles per month. almost everywhere I park the car, I bump into interesting people asking me questions about it...had a Coors Light Beer Truck tailgating me for photos, etc.
I'm thrilled with my Fisker Karma
I've had my Karma since February 2012 and have put several thousand miles on it. That's long enough to say with confidence that it is easily my favorite of any car I've ever owned. From a design standpoint the car is peerless; it is literally head-turning and it's not an exaggeration to say that someone stops, stares or strikes up a conversation about the car every time I drive it. Regardless of the powertrain I think it's the most beautiful four-door sedan on the market. The technology is remarkable. There are environmental, political and practical considerations that make owning an electric vehicle appealing. I think Fisker's approach and execution are spot-on. Current battery technology and a lack of charging infrastructure make having a "pure" EV limiting. Fisker's approach is to have an electrically driven car that you plug-in to charge, with a battery sufficient to most missions most days. On days where I need to drive beyond the range of my battery the onboard range extender can generate electricity on the fly. That allows me to drive in pure electric mode 90% of the time but gives me flexibility and unlimited range when I need it. Even so, my use of gasoline is minimal. I haven't been to a gas station in three months and over the last 1800 miles I'm averaging 143MPG. That's not a typo. The Karma is very sporty and handles amazingly. It's also plenty quick and plenty fast. Having said that, this isn't a drag racer and there are plenty of cars with better 0-60 times. There are people who don't like the politics of supporting EVs (nevermind that much of what's said is inaccurate), there have been a couple high-profile problems with individual vehicles and early deliveries, including mine, needed software refinements and corrections. A couple software updates over the last six months have addressed all the major complaints. My Karma operates flawlessly and my ownership experience has been first-rate.
Fisker Karma a Dream Come True
Sure when I first took deliver there were bugs....but after software upgrades the car runs flawlessly. Drop dead gorgeous, a joy to drive, performs like a dream. I get home after work and plug it in and magically have a full charge in the morning...and if I have an unexpected long trip, no problem, the ICE (internal combustion engine) kicks in. Part of the genius of the Fisker is the STEALTH / SPORT option. 95% of the time you don't need 402 HP, so driving in STEALTH (all electric) is more than adequate. But when you want to accelerate onto the highway, hit the paddle and 402 horses are unleashed...and with 940 ft lb of torque at all RPM and a single gear, it feels like I am in the cockpit of a rocket ship....the artificial Fisker sound whirring enhances the feeling. One of the unexpected benefits of driving this gorgeous car is the TIME I save not detouring to filling station twice a week. And every time I park, I return to find a group of gawkers hovering around the car. So forget all the sour grapes, the Fisker Karma is great Karma, saving the planet one vehicle at a time.
DOE caused bad ethical judgement. My car sits idle after less than 2 days. Too many problems to mention. stops running. Lights, or no lights it is all bad. This evil mistress never has run properly. We all wait for the elusive software update. Dozens of unreturned calls. How much pain do you want to endure from ignorant sales staff and dealers that don'really want to disclose the problems everyone has seen. Hey maybe if we don't get any call backs e should just live with the most unreliable car since Luca stopped making British cars run. Wait the year or two, they don't give refunds.
My Fisker experience so far...
Ok, so I haven't taken delivery yet, but I had to put in ratings in order to comment. Sorry for misleading. But I HAD to share my experience so far- actually my trepidation. Desperately reaching out to those who have an owner experience. I placed my order over a year ago. Dealer communication terrible. First delivery date was July, then Sept, then Nov, then Jan, now March!!! Finally wrote to manuf and got some real info. Car started production 12/15, was done on 1/9 (?!). Then to port, 3-4 weeks on the boat, then to port Newark for testing and "updates" . Huh? Told to expect delivery early to mid-Mar. I'm having 2nd thoughts about accepting this vehicle. They have NO lease option. At least with a lease you can give it back at the end and its not your problem anymore. Even though the reviews were good, its heavy and isnt very fast by the #'s, but in my test drive it was quite quick off the line- I had no issue with the quickness. There are 3 on ebay for sale- looks like guys trying to sell them for a big # over MSRP and pick up some quick cash. BUT, they aren't moving. Enter the Tesla Model S Performance- 100% electric, 300mi on a charge, as fast off the line as a Porsche 911, 2 trunks, seats 5. I'm supposed to get this one mid-12. Inclined to wait on the Tesla. BUT, nobody has ever driven one and who knows, it could be the same issue as with the Fisker. I need to hear from some current Fisker owners. Problems, issues? Thanks.
