i have an 04 dodge ram 1500 quadcab and had water in the electrical about 4 times from new england rain. i had transmission "shudder" at 50 k miles, and had tranny codes ranging from bad solnoids to 4th and 5th gear ratio incorrect codes. i hear mutter from people mentioning faulty valvebody, they were made with a plastic module and the new ones come with a metal module and had a recall for a small period of time, i did research on this and found no such recall.took to dealership dodge would not honor warranty, by the time it was adressed truck has 86k miles on it, even though i noticed tranny "shudder" at 44k miles, which intensified in 4 wheel drive.dealership finally replaced torque converter and trany oil pump and codes still apeared, dealership fired the tech and did tranny overhaul replaced clutch plated and ordered new valvebody( i suspect valvebody was defective but they wanted money from me anyways). i have truck back and notice rough tranny operation , i have my fingers crossed and aslo have been looking into a new toyota, not sure cause i like the hemi power, hemi uses the rockerarm and rod design in the motor offering more towing and midrange power, toyota uses dual overhead cams , which i am hesatant on in the 5.7 v8 , i think dual overhead cam offers less tow capacity and higher reving capabilities, more for speed rather then towing. 6 speed tranny also more for speed and fuel economy rather then towing, i am not fully educated on this as of yet. i did minimal towing with the didge truck mostly highway miles and only hauled a 4 wheeler in the back( roughly 600 pounds).although hemi is a nice engine with plenty of power , reliability suffers even after they redesigned the tranny i believe i have a rc-45 tranny in the dodge, which is heavier duty then trannys in the past with the 318 motor.i cant justify spending 30 to 40 k on a truck with these kinds of problems arising between 40 and 86k miles.

I bought this truck in February of 2008. It's a regular cab SLT Sport 4WD with a short bed. I am not a fan of Sport models, so this somewhat biases my review. I prefer off-road themed models, but I couldn't pass up the low miles and low price. PROS: 5.7L Hemi provides strong acceleration, good towing and hauling capability, handles excellent in snow and ice, relatively tight turning radius, lots of room behind seats to carry cargo. CONS: Reliability, recommended tune-ups even with warranty are very expensive, transmission does not shift smoothly, no console shifter, 20" wheels provide very bumpy ride, midgrade fuel recommended, front seats do not go back far enough for best comfort. Had I gone with my original choice, a Chevrolet Colorado, I believe I would've been happier (I'm a Chevrolet fan). I gave Dodge a shot this time around. I'm not disappointed, but I'm not completely blown over either. Nevertheless, this has been a good truck, and I may consider purchasing a Dodge in the future, but Chevrolet will come first.

The 04 Ram I have was at the top of the market at the time but how things have changed. I did not think I would buy another truck for some time but after looking over the new 09 Ram I think I will be getting back that dreaded payment book. Dodge has went through this truck from top to bottom and the imporovements are without question the best yet......move over chevy, ford......the new king has arrived.

Dodge build a good truck. They ride good, have comfortable seats, and plenty of power. The paint holds up well. The weak points are the plastic dashboards come apart and the 4x4's get terrible fuel milage. But the #1 problem among everyone I know who has bought one, is the poor dealer service departments.

I love my Dodge. It's my second one and there WILL be a third! I get closer to 20+ mpg, on the highway. It's quick, reliable, comfortable! I have actually had SEVEN large adults inside! I'm going to have to replace it someday and that will be a sad day!
