2006 Dodge Durango Overview
Introduction
The Dodge Durango is a large size sport utility vehicle with four doors. It can seat up to eight people and has been a well known standard bearer for the Dodge label. It can handle off road terrain as well as large trips to the grocery store.
The Durango is powerful, boldly designed and, surprisingly, quite refined. The vehicle has a large load capacity with 100 cubic feet of cargo space and, with the Hemi engine, can tow up to 8,950 pounds. The Durango is quite safe for an SUV and awarded the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Five-Star frontal impact rating in 2005. Two V8s are available and both are superb. The popular 4.7-liter V8 and the 5.7-liter Hemi V8 are smooth and powerful. They come with a five-speed automatic that's smooth, refined, and responsive. Multi-Displacement System (MDS) comes with the 5.7 liter V-8, which shuts down half of the cylinders during light load conditions for better fuel economy.
For 2006, the entry level Durango was dropped. The Durango SXT is now the basic model available to consumers. Also, dual stage front air bags and an occupant-sensing system for the passenger-side front air bag have become standard. Curtain airbags and electronic stability control are available as options.
NHTSA Frontal Crash Test
NHTSA rates crash-tested vehicles by assigning them one to five stars, with five stars indicating the most injury protection and one star indicating the least protection.
