2006 Chevrolet Avalanche 1500 Overview
Introduction
The Chevy Avalanche is one slick, innovative truck for someone who sometimes wants the utility of an eight-foot bed and other times needs seating for four, five or even six people.
The Avalanche comes in two weight ranges, called 1500 and 2500. The 1500 series is offered in rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive. It is offered in standard LS and more upmarket LT trim. It is powered by a 5.3-liter Vortec V8 producing 295 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque. It is controlled with a 4L60-E four-speed automatic transmission and is rated to tow 8200 pounds with 2WD, 7900 pounds with 4WD. Published payload capacities are 1363 pounds with 2WD, 1349 pounds with 4WD. The unique feature of the Avalanche is the clever Midgate that allows the rear passenger seats to be converted into additional flatbed space.
For 2006, the Chevrolet Avalanche sees minimal changes. A tire pressure monitor now comes standard.
The Chevrolet Avalanche 1500 successfully combines the hauling capacity of a long-bed pickup with the comfort of a five-passenger sport utility vehicle.
The Chevy Avalanche comes in one configuration, a half-ton, full-size pickup with four doors, room for up to six passengers and outfitted with a unique, fold-down rear bulkhead accessing an enclosed bed. Three engines are offered, two 5.3-liter V8s, one making 320 horsepower in the two-wheel drive version, another 310 horsepower in the four-wheel drive model, and a 355-hp, 6.0-liter V8 scheduled to appear later in the model run. The transmission is a four-speed automatic, mated to an electronic transfer case in four-wheel-drive models. Safety features that come standard on all models include the required front-seat airbags, LATCH rear-seat child safety seat anchors, and the OnStar crash-notification system.
The Chevrolet Avalanche 1500 is fully redesigned in 2007.
