Dear Tom,
I own a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a hemi engine. I run it on medium grade gasoline. How often should I change the oil? Also, how much should I expect to pay for an oil change for a hemi engine? Thank you.

Patty,
The engine in your truck should be a 5.7-liter Hemi. If it is, the crankcase capacity is 7.0 quarts; add a high quality oil filter and it should cost you about $60 (if you use synthetic oil, add about $30). For regular oil the recommended interval will be 3-5K miles. For synthetic it will be 5-7K miles. Some folks go higher depending on the brand of oil.

Dear Tom,
I own a 2008 Ford cargo van that's used for deliveries. I drive about 100 miles per day and do a lot of stop and go. I use Mobil 1 oil and change it every 2,000 miles. Is this oil change interval too aggressive? Could it go longer? I depend on this van and can't afford any problems. Thank you.
Sal from Staten Island, NY
Sal,
Every 2,000 miles might be a bit excessive when using Mobil 1 because it's a high-grade synthetic oil. I suggest you extend the interval to 5,000 miles. Make sure you change the oil filter every oil change
Tom

2. Tom;; I have 2 antique cars, a 1956 Meteor Rideau (Canadian Ford Fairlane) with a 292 C. I. Y block and a 1965 Volvo 122S with a 1.8 litre 4. I only put about 1000 miles on each during the year and run Castrol 10W-30 petroleum based oil. Is it necessary to change the oil annually or can I do it less frequently without hurting the engine. Also, should I add a zinc additive to preserve the soft metal parts? THANK YOU for any assistance you can give in this regard.

8. Hope someone knowledgeable replies to the above comments, as I am a very senior citizen driving a 95 Jeep Cherokee 4.0L straight six, automatic. I drive less than 5K a year, and have used nothing but synthetic oil since new. I realize such short trips are considered severe usage, as the engine and oil never gets really hot. So how often should I change the synthetic oil? I want this car to outlast me, so prefer to error on the agressive side.

9. Similar situation and question... I have a 2nd vehicle which is a Land Rover Discovery series 1 from 1996. I LOVE the vehicle ! I drive it only about 5,000 miles per year... using Castrol Syntec blend.. but much of it short city trips and still change it no later than at 6 months even though it may not even have the 3000 miles on it. Does that sound prudent, or just dumb? If it makes me feel better, then why not keep the tradition !! ??? ! ?

10. Greetings to all,
I have an air-cooled(read oil cooled) 1997 Porshe 911 that is a garage queen. I drive it under 500 miles a year. I use Mobil-1. As it costs over $250 to change the oil,can I go more than 1 year before changing? I was told that milage is more important than age for Mobil-1. Thank you for any response!

13. Should I still follow the recommended oil change (every 3 months or 3000 miles)even if it says in the maintenance reminder the oil life is 80%? The car is 2006 Honda Civic and mileage use is only about 6,000 miles/yr.
Thank you.

18. Tom: I purchased a new 2005 6-cyl Ford Ranger pickup for my son who became ill and has not been working. As a result my family has only put an average of 400 miles a year on the vehicle. It is still in mint condition. I've had the oil changed about every six months with 5w-20 Castrol oil, as well as a new filter. Would it be proper to let the change go for at least a year. What is your recommendation?

19. I am the lucky owner of a 2007 Porsche 911 Twin Turbo. I drive about 8,000 miles/year for pleasure, mostly local but long enough to heat the oil to a normal 200 degrees F. The owner's manual suggests using Mobil One synthetic 0-40W and changing the oil and filters only every 20,000 miles! That's right, 20,000 miles. What do you think???? So far, I changed oil/filters at 10,000k.

20. You can take this for what it is worth but I have a
'97 Dodge 3/4 ton van -V6 with over 180,000 mi. and have always followed the Mfrg. rec. of 7,500 mi. between changes (4 quart capacity) and a '95 Taurus 3L V6 with over 200,000 mi. that has had 6,000 mi. change intervals (5 quart)both with new filters w/change. No engine problems with either.
