A Texas police officer became a hero last Monday when he shoved a woman out of the path of an alleged drunk driver.

The incident happened along 19th Street in Lubbock. Officer Philip Standefer and his partner had responded to a minor traffic accident along the road. Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed a major one about to happen.

Video shows the result. In a split second, Standefer pushes the woman out of the way as a white van careens down the road and smashes into Standefer's cruiser. The wreckage spins by, narrowly missing the two officers and the woman.

Standefer, 26, spent a night in an area hospital, according to the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, and received treatment for minor injuries. Police arrested Peter Keltz, 23, the driver of the van, and charged him with three counts, including driving while intoxicated.
