Vehicles Most Likely To Get You A Speeding Ticket

Drive One of These? Slow Down

Taking a close look at real-life data sometimes has a way of upending conventional wisdom. Take the recent study that reveals a correlation between what people drive and how they drive -- that is, how fast, how slow, or how safely.

For starters, the data compiled in the study contradicts the conventional wisdom that fire-breathing sports cars are the ones that are ticketed most often for speeding and other moving violations. Indeed, the most-ticketed vehicle in the study, conducted by Quality Planning -- a company that validates policyholder info for auto insurers -- was the Hummer H2/H3. It seems speeding tickets follow the large behemoths.

However, another finding of the study does reinforce a truism, which is that younger people generally people drive faster -- and get more speeding tickets -- than older drivers. That would explain why three different Scion vehicles were among the Top 10 vehicles that got the highest percentage of speeding tickets: Scion's demographic skews prominently to drivers in their 20s and 30s.

The following gallery shows the Top 10 vehicles that received the greatest number of moving violations (including speeding tickets) in the study, which was based on data gathered between August 2007 and September 2008, using a sample size of 1.7 million vehicles.

The "rating" number listed for each model represents how much more likely the model was to get a moving violation, compared with the survey's overall average score of all vehicles. For example, the Hummer's rating of 4.63 means it was 4.63 times more likely to get a ticket than the average score.

The vehicle info in each slide is for the latest model-year available. (A few, like the Scion xA, are no longer in production.)

Later, in another story, we'll present the list of the vehicles that were least likely to get speeding tickets.
