Can Trucks Survive
The death of the minivan is upon us as more buyers migrate towards the used sports utility vehicle. And for good reason. Roominess, high profile control and the power to get things done epitomizes the heart of used SUVs. This class of automobiles offers something for everyone looking for versatility and performance from their ride. From soccer moms who need to shuttle carloads of kids to soccer practice, to adventuresome individuals who like off-road excitement, there's a used SUV for everyone in every price range.

If you're thinking about buying a used SUV, here are a few guidelines to ensure your purchase more than delivers on its promises.

Top Selling Used Cars

1. Look for a used SUV that's still under warranty. In most cases, the warranty on a used SUV is transferable to a new owner, and lasts 36 months or 36,000 miles from the original date of purchase. However, before you sign, make sure that your used SUV is covered by any remaining time on the warranty.

2. Have the vehicle evaluated by a trusted mechanic. A trained eye and ear will notice problems that might not be immediately apparent on a used sports utility vehicle. If the dealer refuses to allow you to have an appraisal off-site, run to the next dealership and consider yourself lucky for having dodged used SUV drama.

3. Do some research online. Type "(your model) lemon" into AOL Search and browse the results. If there have been significant problems with that model of used SUV, these will be people online ranting and raving.

4. Ask to see the service documentation. A well maintained used SUV will have paperwork outlining oil changes and other routine maintenance. If not, it's not a huge red flag for the prospective buyer.

5. Seek out Certified, Pre-Owned used SUVs. CPO certification means that the used SUV has had a good going-over by a mechanic, and any problems have been corrected before the vehicle appears on the lot. Be sure to take a look at the certification qualifications for your used SUV to see what is checked for.

6. Run a CARFAX report on the VIN. The CARFAX website is meant to help people learn more about the used SUV he or she wants to purchase. The Vehicle Identification Number is easily located at the base of the windshield on a stamped piece of metal. A report costs around $25 and can provide a more thorough history of the used SUV such as past accidents, recalls, etc.

There are a ton of variables and configurations for used Sports Utility Vehicles, many of which blur the lines between "trucks" and "cars". Overall these four models consistently receive the highest ratings from owners, magazines and industry pundits alike.

· Honda Pilot

Honda has built a reputation for exceptional reliability, and the Pilot is no exception. This used SUV consistently receives rave reviews from owners, and retains its resale value from year to year. Its most remarkable innovation may be a VCM (Variable Cylinder Management) system which can automatically alternate the 3.5-liter V-6 engine between 6- and 3-cylinder modes for improved fuel efficiency. Worthy of a look if you're undecided on which used Sports Utility Vehicle to purchase.

· Toyota 4Runner

If you're looking for a used crossover SUV, the 4Runner has been at the top of its class for over 20 years. Able to perform nimbly on-road and off, the 4Runner offers the rugged dependability that the Toyota crest exemplifies, and consistently holds its value come trade-in time.

If you need to tow a boat or camper, the 4.7 Liter V-8 tops out at 260 horsepower and a very gutsy 306 pound-feet of torque. If there is a downside to this model (and there aren't many), it's that the 4Runner offers less cargo space and cannot comfortably seat as many adults as other used SUVs.

· Subaru Forester

Categorized as a "small" SUV, the Forester features Subaru's seamless All Wheel Drive and offers a lower center of balance, which affords enviable on-road comfort and handling. This lower clearance makes it less attractive for off-road use, but still provides superior comfort and handling in adverse weather conditions.

For those favoring acceleration and performance over towing capacity, the Forester’s turbocharged 230 horsepower 2.5 Liter four-cylinder engine is fast off the line and more than capable of handling the occasional off-road romp. Not a bad option for performance oriented used Sports Utility Vehicle buyers.

· Nissan Pathfinder

The Pathfinder has carved its own niche among SUV aficionados by successfully striking a balance between on- and off-road performance. The interior features plenty of storage and amenities, as well as comfortable head and legroom for driver and passengers alike. It is available in 2- and 4-wheel drive models which makes it an attractive option for used SUV buyers that want a little of everything from their used Sports Utility Vehicle.

A standard 4.0 Liter V-6 produces 270 horsepower and 291 pound-feet of torque which makes towing a 5,000 pound trailer uphill effortless. This kind of power makes the Pathfinder a workhorse for dad’s weekend projects, while also making mom’s day-to-day errands easy and fun.

Finding a used SUV to match your personality gets easier as more models roll off the production line. Whether you simply need it for your hectic lifestyle, or for some off-road fun, you can certainly find a reliable, well built, excellent performing used SUV.
