The much anticipated 2013 Ford Focus ST will get 32 mpg on the highway, Ford officials said today.

The performance version of the compact Focus, the ST promises to give any driver a thrill ride with its 252 horsepower 2-liter Ecoboost engine. The engine features an overboost that will provide 270 pound-feet of torque for a full 15 seconds.

The final approved mileage numbers, released today, are 23 mpg in the city, 32 mpg on the highway and 26 mpg combined. That puts the Focus ST 1 mpg better than Volkswagen GTI's 31 mpg and 7 mpg better than the Mazda Speed3 on the highway.

"We're putting the 'power' in the power of choice, again," said Raj Nair, Ford group vice president, Global Product Development in a news release. "This is just one more example of the 'win-win' in the Focus ST narrative. This kind of performance combined with these high levels of efficiency sets a new benchmark with this car."

The front-wheel drive compact sports car segment may be small, but there's plenty of vehicles to choose from that offer practical mileage, a roomy hatch and loads of four-cylinder power.

The Focus ST arrives at dealerships later this summer and will have a starting price of $24,495, including shipping.
