As they try to fight their way out of the current sales slump, automakers have turned low-rate financing as their key incentive for consumers. Some of the best offers involve either 0% financing for 60 months and combinations of a low interest rate and a cash rebate. They deliver what consumers are especially looking for these days: a low-monthly payment they can fit into a tight household budget.

You can find 0% deals on everything from $13,000 compacts to $40,000 luxury cars. Even at the low end, a special interest rate could easily trim $35 to $40 off your monthly payment, and bring your total savings to more than $2,000. All other things being equal, your new car will doubtless get better mileage than your old one, adding to your savings. One final observation: As GM and Chrysler emerge from restructuring, they intend to finally break their old overproduction habits and rely less on huge incentives to sell their vehicles. That will affect the entire industry. Prices will trend upward and incentives will shrink. As a result, there may be no better time to buy a new vehicle than right now.

Editor's Pick: 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt
As gas prices steadily rose during late spring, the special advantage of the Chevy Cobalt stood out: This compact averages 37 mpg on the highway, more than virtually every other car on the road -- thanks to its base 2.2-liter, 155-horsepower four-cylinder engine. By some standards, the Cobalt is a subcompact, not a compact, but that distinction will matter little to drivers saving hundreds of dollars every year at the pump. While Cobalts have been snapped up in the past, the ongoing sales slump has assured an ample supply for consumers right now. Aside from its smaller base engine, the Cobalt is available as an SS, with a 260 hp, 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder engine. The base power plant has either a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic transmission, and the turbo comes with a five-speed manual. At some point, dealers will be especially motivated to keep the Cobalt moving off their lots since the new Chevrolet Cruze is due to replace it in 2010.

I own a Chevrolet Cobalt. The claims of this car getting that mpg on the highway is a joke. As someone who drives the speed limit on the interstate I can say the car gets the worst gas mileage out of all small sedans. I regularly get around 25 on highway. I have never once been at 30 or better. The original dealership told me that was normal I was getting the mpg. I got better mpg in my SUV Escape than I do with this lemon. The car also shuts down when I drive, shakes, makes weird noises, was damaged and sold to me as brand new and I had to foot the cost of repair. GM does not stand behind its warranty as I've paid for all the work. The car is also terrible inside and out. Looks bad, drives worse, electronics inside are terrible and don't work half the time. I get no signal from XM in the middle of an open field and XM resends signals but it never works, GM says its not apart of my warranty its XM's problem. Local radio stations don't work they are full of static again GM doesn't cover this under warranty. I've had my passenger side airbag try and deploy itself and I was again told by 2 dealers this was normal before their Executive Office finally agreed it was not normal and fixed the work after driving around for weeks with my airbag trying to pop. Buying the Cobalt is basically buying a deathtrap.

Import Lovers, Will try and leave the name calling at that, trust me I know a few mo, worked at GM Lordstown for 40 yrs. Just retired, and enjoying family, time, riding my American Motorcycles (Harleys)! Ever wonder why you don't see any Jap or korean cars from the 40's or 50's? Oh yeh, they were busy building war machines, and killing our family and friends!! My Kids, Both Vets Army Maj (with masters deg.), and Marine Corporal grew up with the Cavaliers, and I'm driving a Cobalt now, we have enjoyed a good family life, thanks to GM, and the UAW! I'm sorry that if going to WORK every day, hitting the line, or delivering parts, allowed me to make more money than a Lawyer? Sounds to me like he wasted his degree, perhaps too busy playing golf, or being such a smart consumer! Sure the Big Three made some mistakes, so did our Government, and maybe some customers got a bad quality car from time to time. Oh for the sports car affectiono, the new (KOOL) Camaro, comes in around 23, or 24,000, and up, if you want a real AMERICAN DEAL, spend the 33, or 34,000, and treat yourself to what is was like to be on the street in the "HAPPY DAYS" !!! My next car will be a RS Camaro, thinking around $29,000, and you know what I earned it, my U.S. money buying a U.S. car, what a thought!! 1st time writer, usually just read this crap, but so tired of the whining, the slaming, the people that think they are owed something. Auto industry is a complex problem, no one easy answer to sort it all out, but I am happy our Govt. and the Big Three, and UAW, have pulled together, for sure have my own interests. But so do most of you! The money gets spread all around, several years ago, the church my family attended, the Pastor was telling me what a deal, he got on his Honda. I ask how many Honda workers made contributions to his church on Sunday, or how much money does the Honda Factory put into "Our" community? At the time GM Lordstown workers were contributing Hundreds of thousands to United Way, not sure what it is today, just not that many of us? Buy what you ********** your money, hope you earned it, and not just crying, because somebody hasn't payed your way! Alan T. Proud to be an American

It's sad that there are so many people out there that don't realize the importance of buying American. Hopefully the people that have no idea what they are talking about and that buy foreign cars are the ones having trouble finding jobs.

GM and Chrysler could build the best cars at the lowest price in the solar system, but as long as the UAW would see one dime of my money in a car purchase, I will not buy one. That goes for Ford too. Even though Ford is not owned by the government or the UAW yet, they do have UAW workers in their plants. As a UAW worker at Ford, is your allegiance to Ford or the UAW (owner of your competitors). Having worked with the UAW in the past, I know they could care less about the customer and even "more" less about management. Sad to say, but as long as the UAW is a part of GM, Chrysler and Ford, I will be buying foreign made autos. That said, I expect that our government will be out there very soon telling us what cars we can and cannot buy. The people I know that voted for this kind of "change" have already had a change of heart since the election.

Ford, Chevy, Honda, American or Foreign, the problem is that there all over priced. Everyday people cant afford the American made cars. $52000 for a Tahoo, $48000 for an F-150, and the Escalade Hybid that was spoke of which I just drove $90000, Thats and expensive 400 horse power pulling machine. Who can really afford them. There all over priced doesnt matter whether it is American or Foreign. $35000 for a honda accord. Chevy will now give 15000 cash back on a 1500-2500 trucks, how overpriced was it to begin with. There still making a profit. The people who buy the cars are the ones being screwed over. When you drive a car off the lot it looses up to 10000 dollars instantly. If you dont believe, go buy one and drive it down the road to a dealer 10 miles away and see if you get what you paid. Foreign cars sell because of there technology. Good horsepower combined with luxury and good gas mileage. If you want a great truck that can pull the house American is the way to go. If you need to drive 100 miles a day you cant beat foreign. Foreign cars do provide more for the money. Rarely can you get an American made vehicle full loaded for what you can get a foreign one for. I bought a 30000 Nissan Altima V6 fully loaded for 5000 less than any compbable american made Chevy or Ford.
