The first time I took my Trailblazer in for an oil change they put a sticker on the window saying come back in 3000 miles, the second time I took it in they changed it to 5000 miles. I will wait on the service light and see what it tells me now.

I have a 06 Toyota Tacoma far from GM but the oil light comes on for oil change and upon reading the owners manual when it does it only takes 15 seconds to reset it by turning the ignition switch on and off several times

EVERYONE TALKS ABOUT THE INTERVAL OIL CHANGES AND HOW OIL BREAKS DOWN. NOT ONE MENTION ABOUT SYNTHETIC OIL. ITS A SUPERIOR OIL AND I HAVE USED IT FOR YEARS. WHEN THE CORVETTES INDICATE ON THE OIL FILL CAP TO USE MOBIL-1, IT WILL DO A WORLD OF GOOD WITH THE VEHICLES TODAY, WITH THE EXTREME HEAT AND COLD.........LIVEEYE@AOL.COM

I have a new Chevy Impala. I've had it since 2-14-08. It says oil life it still 20%. We have drove it over 6000 miles already. My husband took it to the race in bristol 3 weeks after we got it. Until reading this I was kinda wondering if the system was off. I guess not.

Keep it simple. Follow the manufacturers recommendations, and use the manufacturers parts, no matter what make and model you may own. This rule of thumb is broken about 98% of the time, therefore creating more problems that could have easily been avoided.

To Pantherpack - some oil gets past the rings and is combusted, (or leaks) hence the down 1-2 quarts at oil change time. Oil level should be checked between changes - Auto Maint 101. To HealGhanz - the owners' manuals of many years past say to change oil every 3000 miles only under certain severe conditions - I've changed it every 6 months between 5000 - 7000 miles)for the last 20 years in my cars and had no problems whatsoever related to that. The only people thay preach 3000 miles are the oil change people and maint depts that make their money on repeat customers!!

I use full synthetic oil in my car. How does the GM sensor take this into account?

theoretically this is an ingenious system, IF the execution of it is equal to the concept. That is, does the system perform exactly the way it is supposed to. the only way for this to be known is for there to be quality control measures in real production cars. randomly, a hundred or so car owners should be paid to come in for oil changes every time the light comes on. then the oil should be examined by an independent laboratory to ascertain all of its critical values; oxidation, viscosity, breakdown, lubrication ability, chemical additive presence and breakdown, Also if the engine is not built to proper specifications, or the oil filter is not working properly, or if there is excessive oil consumption, then this system may not work effectively. It sounds like a complex system that is interdependent on multiple factors and miltiple sensors as well as consistency of production of ALL of the engine components. My advice; change the oil every 3 months.

If the oil doesn't break down then why do 90% of the cars I service come in 1 to 2 quarts low when the vehicle is at 30% life. I change oil for a living and do not trust this system as I work in the real world, not an engineers and see the facts for myself. Ask your engineers to exlpain that one away.
