    Toyota's new recall announcement of 2.3 million vehicles involves issues with sticking accelerator pedals.

    In another blow to the company's long-standing reputation for quality, Toyota said that they would announce another recall today, spanning some 2.3 million cars for problems with sticking accelerator pedals.

    The January 2010 recall includes the 2009-2010 RAV4, the 2009-2010 Corolla, the 2009-2010 Matrix, the 2005-2010 Avalon, the 2007-2010 Camry, the 2010 Highlander, the 2007-2010 Tundra and the 2008-2010 Sequioia. Toyota noted that the recall does not include the Prius or any of the Lexus or Scion brands, which use a pedal system from a different manufacturer.

    The company was quick to note that this is actually a separate recall from the late 2009 recall involving 4.3 million vehicles for incorrect floor mats. This issue is related to the pedal system itself, which can become worn down and can become "sticky over time," according to company spokesman Brian Lyons.

    The company's press release provided an explanation of what a driver might experience:

    "The condition is rare, but can occur when the pedal mechanism becomes worn and, in certain conditions, the accelerator pedal may become harder to depress, slower to return or, in the worst case, stuck in a partially depressed position."

    Toyota noted that the remedy and timing of the fix isn't apparent yet. Today's announcement is a notice that they will bring a recall, not the actual recall filing itself.

    Although Toyota hasn't indicated how many incidents led to this particular recall, they did indicate that reports of stuck gas pedals have surfaced in vehicles with no floor mats.

    “In recent months, Toyota has investigated isolated reports of sticking accelerator pedal mechanisms in certain vehicles without the presence of floor mats,” said TMS Group Vice President Irv Miller.

    “Our investigation indicates that there is a possibility that certain accelerator pedal mechanisms may, in rare instances, mechanically stick in a partially depressed position or return slowly to the idle position. Consistent with our commitment to the safety of our cars and our customers, we have initiated this voluntary recall action.”

    Following the tragedy that claimed the lives of a family of four last August, Toyota has been more closely investigating throttle issues on all of their vehicles. The terrible tragedy of the Saylor family occurred when the gas pedal of the family's loaner Lexus ES350 became entrapped on the floor mat. We later learned that the accident was entirely avoidable, as another customer reported a similar issue to the dealership earlier that week. Sadly, the message was never relayed and nothing was done to address it.

    While the dealership was more to blame in that situation, Toyota began an intense investigation. Besides issuing a voluntary recall on affected vehicles, Toyota also offered some advice that can be used here as well, if you happen to find yourself in a situation where your gas pedal becomes stuck while depressed.

    If the accelerator pedal sticks in a partially open throttle position or returns slowly to idle position, the vehicle can be controlled with firm and steady application of the brakes. Don't pump the brakes because it could deplete the vacuum assist. That would make it even harder to depress the brake pedal. The brakes will stop the vehicle no matter the throttle position. When under control, the vehicle should be driven to the nearest safe location and the engine should be turned off. Contact a Toyota dealer as soon as possible for assistance.

    The recall is only a drop in the bucket, I have a hard time with, anyone in this fine country,even considering spending American dollars on this foreign junk, aside from the fact, that they are far more expensive to repair, when they do break down, even with a warranty.when you idiots make the careless mistake , of spending our American dollars on a product that is killing the U.S. economy. The argument has been made about made in America, when the facts show that at best, this junk is only at best 35% U.S. labor. If we quit buying this junk, we will not have all the recall problems, and we can get our economy back, If it is not to late !!.

    2001 Camry that's about to die.... gas pedal gets stuck & won't go down easily, when you apply a bit more pressure it jerks and you go.... also, dashlights extremely dim, cd player just died and now my defroster/heater only works on HIGH...thought I could easily change a fuse, but NO... they must tear apart the whole dashboard to fix it which will run about $160 to start...... great.

    I feel safer in my Toyota then any American car I can think of......had a Dodge Caravan once and had to put the tow truck company phone number on my cell phone speed dial!!! What a nightmare.

    MY 2010 RAV4 IS IN THE SHOP NOW . WHEN THE MOTOR CUT OFF SOMETHING KEPT RUNNING UNDER THE HOOD, IT RAN THE BATTERY DEAD . I DON'T BELIEVE THEY KNOW WHAT IT IS. MAY HAVE ANOTHER PROBLEM WITH THESE CARS. EMCONAWAY@AOL.COM

    I have an 08 Camary. When I first got the floor mat recall a year ago I went to the dealer with the recall card. They didn't have the mat in stock and ordered it. When they called and I came in again, the replacment mat was a dark brown, not tan like the original. I said it wouldn't match the others in the car. They said sorry, that's the deal and I told them to keep it. Now I have received another mat recall.....what the hell? I stll have not recieved the gas pedal recall....they must first want to recall the mats. What's the realproblem the mats or the pedal or the elctronics? In my opinion, there is no way the pedal can get stuck under the mat. There is just way too much distance between the two.

    Toyota can’t catch a break , a global recall of hybrid cars confirms the issue was more than they lead on , they attempted to hide the seriousness of the problem. Until a never seen before amount public and government pressure caused them to come clean . http://www.car-recalls.info 2010 will sure be a record breaking year for auto recalls with every major car companies feeling the pain . I looked and discovered my car was recalled . I’m just in shock at the huge volume of recalls this year and its only the 3rd month

    Anyone experience surges when air conditioner or defroster is on?? I've complained about this with my 2003 Corolla since the day I bought it. Dealership just shook their head and said, No problem.&*************** requires that I keep foot FIRMLY planted on brake when at a light.

    We have owned exclusively Toyotas since 1980. We have never had a single problem with any of our cars or trucks. I think these complaints are from people who are trying to get in on class action lawsuits. We have a 2010 Prius, and got the brakes software redone in 30 minutes. We had never had any problem on the ice or snow. I wouldn't keep an American car if I were given one. Toyotas last and last. All these complainers are probably people who work for the dying American car companies. Who else would buy an American car, other than those who work for the rotting companies?

    The Consumer Reports auto department is in desperate need of a major reorganization. You really cannot blame the auto testers who carry out the nitty gritty work. What do they know about odds/statistics and collecting data? Face the facts, there needs to be a top down change organizational change @ CR. The testing methodology, Surveys, Format and delivery of vehicle reviews is not only obsolete it is a breeding ground for bugs. The test methodology invites manipulation amongst CRs auto testers by allowing them to put final rating score on each vehicle without showing their work. It is the same process used when only the big three were around. And as far as the reliability surveys, how can an organization as large as Consumer Reports think they can obtain reliable survey data from a targeted (cult like) demographic like subscribers to a biased CR magazine. CR staffers do not even realize they are leading the witness. Let me give a couple of simple analogies that I have been posting for years now. I have many friends that like domestics vehicles and have had good luck with them. A lot of them do not subscribe to Consumer reports because they think the it is biased. As a matter of fact they badmouth CR every chance they can. If they filled out Consumer Reports reliability survey it would favor the domestics. I personally subscribe to CR for auto information but as a car buff I gather auto information from every source I can. If I did fill out CRs auto survey it too would be favorable to the domestics. I have had many reliable domestic vehicles. I fill out J. D. Powers surveys but pass at CRs because I do not want to help CR brag about the number of surveys completed.
